The Lyricism of a Showgirl

It has been a week and a half since the release of Taylor Swift’s twelfth studio album The Life of a Showgirl and I have a few thoughts. This album is fun, saucy, sultry, and danceable. I don’t think it’s her best album, but let’s face it, they can’t all be the best. No artist can continuously top themselves nor should we expect them to. That said, Showgirl has some pretty awesome tunes. My personal favourite at the moment is “Elizabeth Taylor” which, as you will soon notice, is missing from the list below. Not every song needs to be written with a fountain pen to be appreciated. I did want to share a few lyrical gems from other songs that caught my ear, though.

  1. Glowing like the end of a cigarette, wow, she came out - The Life of a Showgirl

  2. I pay the check before it kisses the mahogany grain - Father Figure

  3. Penny’s unlucky, I took him back, and then stepped on a crack and the black cat laughed - Wood

  4. I took her pearls of wisdom, hung them around my neck - The Life of a Showgirl

  5. Buy the paint in the color of your eyes and graffiti my whole damn life - Honey

  6. Sleepless in the onyx night, but now the sky is opalite - Opalite

  7. When your first crush crushes something kind - Eldest Daughter

  8. Can’t you see my infamy loves company - Cancelled!

  9. You wrap around me like a chain, a crown, a vine, pulling me into the fire - The Fate of Ophelia

  10. Paid my dues with every bruise - The Life of a Show Girl

  11. A shattered glass is a lot more sharper - Cancelled!

  12. Your thoughtless ambition sparked the ignition on foolish decisions which led to misguided visions - Father Figure

  13. We lie back
    A beautiful, beautiful time lapse
    Ferris wheels, kisses and lilacs
And things I said were dumb
'cause I thought I'd never find that
    Beautiful, Beautiful life that
    shimmers that innocent light back
    Like when we were young

    - Eldest Daughter
